Don't Draft Drunk #1 - Thran Golem FTW

Welcome to the first edition of Don't Draft Drunk. The series where drinks are flowing and drafts are going. After a typical day at the office, I decided it was about time to complete this trade with ABU I had been thinking about. I recently picked up some great old school stuff and figured I get could some decent store credit for some Urza's Saga stuff. After completing the trade I opted not to draft, but to hit the nearby Buffalo Wildwings for some tasty treats. I also had a punch card for a free beer. I'm already running good! Usually Monson and I would hit the B-Dubbs before Thursday drafts, but with him in class I was on this mission alone. In the words of the great Morgan Freeman "I guess I just miss my friend."

I head to the bar area and see the Red Sox are putting the hurt to the Rangers. I am greeted by the usual good looking bartender and order a Coors Light. I figure before tapping cards I'll tap Rockies. I step my game up and order 6 hot rather than my usual 6 medium. I also get 6 teriaki to go along with my hots. After eating two hots I realized I am sweating and my beer is nearly gone. I quickly order another Coors, only this time the large glass. After taking a big swig, the before mentioned bartender asks where my friend is. I inform her that he is in class therefore I'm flying solo. She recommended sending him a picture of my delicious wings and beer combo. You're missing out Monson.

On my way home I figure I would just sit in my air-conditioned room and play an M12 draft. Perhaps now was the time to bust out the first segment of Don't Draft Drunk. So I stopped off at the gas station for a tall can, got home and cranked the AC, cracked my beer and launched MODO.

This is the 40 I played:

Stormfront Pegasus
Roc Egg
2x Shock
Blood Ogre
Assault Griffin
2x Divine Favor
Solemn Simulacrum
Gideon's Avenger
Elite Vanguard
2x Thran Golem
Goblin Fireslinger
Spirit Mantle
Alabaster Mage
Stonehorn Dignitary
Stave Off
2x Pacifism
Auramancer
Armored Warhorse
Swiftfoot Boots
12 Plains
5 Mountain

All my matches went to three games and many of the decks were also very fast. My deck had some great cheap removal which made me just faster than the other decks. Divine Favor is really working out great for me every time I play it. Auramancer was absolutely insane in this deck too! I probably shouldn't have played the Boots or the Fireslinger as red was pretty scarce in this deck and Boots didn't seem to do much. I did win a few games with an enchanted Thran and Spirit Mantle was probably my MVP. Although when your enchanted creature gets taken by Mind Control that is no good. So many games I was thinking there was nothing I could topdeck, then I would draw that card and get in the last points I needed for the win. Gideon's Avenger stopped opponents attacks dead in their tracks. They were scared to attack with their fliers because the Avenger would start getting ridiculous and their ground creatures just wouldn't be able to deal. One game I had a 6/6 protection from creatures just smashing with them not being able to make much of a counter attack. This deck played amazingly all tournament and it seems speed and tempo is king in this format.

Thanks for reading, and stay tuned for more articles from Don't Draft Drunk series.

Yeah or...

Or don't draft with the entire room drunk: it's called Rhino-Rot.

Not saying you ended up bad

Not saying you ended up bad at all, but there seems like a solid green deck in there, probably even G/W which is better in this format than most.

G/W in M12

I hated passing those green cards but really don't like the color combination of GW and figured I'd just stay away.

You have balls for passing

You have balls for passing Azure Mage and Overrun

:D

Well explained sir, for the most part there was only one or two cards I would have picked differently and played differently but it's crazy to see what goes on in your head is what goes on in my head space. - Only thing I may have added to the deck would have been a fling to go along with the Gideon's Avenger, other than that sweet build.

love it

Divine Favor is one of my favorite new cards. Which is weird, because I would seriously consider Holy Strength a free mulligan if my opponents ever played it. Divine Favor just does so much more, especially since the M12 format is so aggressive. I often draft them with Auramancers, but find that I rarely get them back because the +3 toughness makes the creature so difficult to kill. Sometimes I want the creature to be killed so I can get that three life bonus again.

First three picks seeme pretty bad, but your final deck is pretty sweet.
