Cube List Thoughts

I have only cube drafted one-time ever, so it would be fun to try it again. Last time we used Steve Canty's cube and I drafted an insane black splash red deck featuring Nekrataal, FTK, Cinder Elemental, Animate Dead, and Volrath's Stronghold. I went 3-0 with it because the deck had so much synergy. Here are some of my thoughts on this list:

Red
-Don't really like Goblin Grenade as there aren't many goblins

Blue
-I always was a Palinchron and Treachery fan, if it was me I'd throw 'em in.

Green
-I might add Natural Order

I like the card selection over all! Reminds of playing at Beckmon's with the old crew from back in the day. Hopefully we can cube one of these days

RE: Thoughts

- Honestly this cube slaps that cube around and calls it Nancy. We have already seen some great combo's and it's almost too difficult to draft out of this cube but we "somehow" manage. (LOL)

Red - I think you confused the goblin bombardment with the goblin grenade because we said the same thing about the grenade - final goblin count was 5-6 total

Blue - Both the Treachery & Palinchron are on the bubble and are in the supplemental cards.

Green - natural order not sure if we overlooked it or if we went survival over it. I'd have to double check with Steve he might remember.

I do appreciate the feedback it helps. And we'll definitely have to set up a draft night one of these days this cube is a real hum dinger - totally old school feel with new wave antics.

Initial reaction

I don't have too much experience in cube building, but here are a couple of my initial thoughts on the list.

The first thing I thought was that it seems a player can only go into red if they intend on being full-blown aggro and try to win within the first few turns. There are lots of cards similar to Ball Lightning and Blistering Firecat that only allow for a one-sided strategy in the color. It appears almost every card in a RDW list in the past decade is put into this list, which I love, but could force drafters into a strategy they may not want simply based upon the cards available.

My second thought is that blue is really overpowered (as tends to be the case). Not only does it feature most of the Power 9, but its lesser cards are also more powerful than most of the other colors. From what I can gather blue has massive card advantage and ridiculous removal/tempo that really sets it apart. It also has some ridiculous bomby cards. If I sat down with this cube I might just force blue because you are bound to get a few game-dominating cards.

Those are my initial thoughts on the list, keep in mind I have little experience constructing these so I could be off base. Looks like an awesome cube to draft with though, quite the list of sick cards.

RE: Cube Build Break Down

This Cube list was actually created with the concept of creating an "ultimate Magic Cube" to be perfectly honest. We sat down and broke magic apart into these categories: the five colors, artifacts, "multi-color/gold", & lands. Each category had a sub category of creature, spell/other, plains walker and then was placed in the appropriate mana cost with the purpose of best analysis. The land category was the only exception and we just went for the best in class. We then determined the appropriate amount of cards for each color & type. It broke down as follows:
The 5 colors: 35 creatures, 19 spells/other, 1 plains walker; 55 total/color
Artifact: 10 creature, 25 spell; 35 total
Gold: 14 creature, 15 spell, 1 plains walker; 30 total
Land: 20 total
For a grand total of 360 cards.

For our card pool we analyzed every magic card ever created except non-tournament legal playing sets IE. portal, unglued, unhinged etc. Prior to the card selection phase my friend Steve & I had gone through this card pool & had pre-selected the cards which we thought would fit best in the cube. As we began the card selection phase all the cards that we had both selected automatically made the cube list which was roughly 40% of the cards for the first round of selection. From there we do what we do best, we drafted the remaining portion of the cube from the card pool starting with red creatures with 1 mana cost to 7+ then red spells, so on so forth throughout the entire card pool. There were ultimately some very hard calls to make but we powered through and came up with this list. Now that we do have the cube list finalized we still have quite the list of cards that were not selected and are now debating of creating supplemental 45 card sets to either permanently add to the cube or to just set aside and add for when we have drafts for more than 8 players (remember 45 cards per person)

We have only been drafting with 2-4 people out of this cube so we have not been running into many color issues as of yet but we will definately keep those things in mind. For my part it's just a wonderful feeling to be playing magic the way we used to back in the day with the concept of power negates power. Also one thing to note - this is a draft cube and most of the time you will not always just get money cards as your picks.

I know it's a long explanation but I figured you would appreciate what this process took as this was essentially 3 months worth of work analyzing and planning.

Thanks for the feedback it is appreciated.
