I went to record my first draft for this website last night, but unfortunately I didn’t enable the recorder until after I had started so I missed it. I came out with such a hilarious deck I had to write about it even without the picks to show.
It started with a Rage Nimbus because my pack didn’t have anything amazing in it and I remembered the discussion on this site about the Nimbus. The pack also had a Warmonger’s Chariot that might just table.
I got a few solid red/white cards in this pack, nothing to write home about, but I did get the Chariot back. Second pack I finally cracked my first Vengevine and had to take it for value. I almost switched to Green when I got passed a couple of Kozilek’s Predators but decided to stay with my plan as I was getting decent red/white too. I got a 2nd Rage Nimbus and some other solid walls. A Keening Stone came around and I grabbed as a possible win condition for my developing wall deck. Pack 3 I got 2x Staggershock, Heat Ray, Forked Bolt, to give me some much needed spot removal. I also picked up 2x Vent Sentinel for addition win conditions.
My submitted deck was:
7 Plains
10 Mountain
1 Forked Bolt
2 Oust
1 Smite
1 Warmonger’s Chariot
1 Spawning Breath
1 Kor Line-Slinger
2 Ogre Sentry
2 Rage Nimbus
1 Hedron-Field Purist
1 Dawnglare Invoker
1 Lust for War
2 Staggershock
2 Vent Sentinel
1 Emrakul’s Hatcher
2 Soulbound Guardian
1 Keening Stone
1 Heat Ray
First round was against a W/U leveler deck. I drew both Rage Nimbus right away and used them to kill a couple guys before he could level them big enough to take down the angry clouds. He stopped playing creatures and we played draw go until I threw down Dawnglare Invoker and he threw down a Deathless Angel. I Ousted the Angel to buy some time, but he also got out a Hada Spy Patrol. In response to his final level up I tried to kill it twice, but he had Deprive and the flash Guard Hound to protect it. I still had my Invoker so I took eight once from the Patrol and newly cast Angel, then tapped down his team for a few turns until he Domesticated my Invoker. I Spawning Breathed it and then drew Keening Stone. I chumped his creatures just long enough to activate it twice and mill for the win. I thought he had just enough to kill me when he dropped Gravitational Shift, but his Spy Patrol got -2/-0 and only one of his flyers could get through so it made no difference. He let me see 9 extra cards by not conceding to the first mill of the Stone. I saw a second Domestication so I boarded in a Demystify. Game 2, I dropped an early Lust for War on his Seaside Oracle and had a Slinger to tap it every turn, the damage started to add up. He Domesticated my Dawnglare Invoker again, but when I Ousted it back to my deck and dropped Vent Sentinel he scooped them up.
Round 2, I drew an all removal hand, with my only beater being a Hedron Field-Purist riding in a Chariot. My opponent didn’t do anything but drop land and use three Repel the Darkness to tap down my one dude. The Purists were fully leveled and when he finally made a Dawnglare Invoker I had a Spawning Breath for it. This proved crucial as he had been stalling to play Consuming Vapors. I sacked the Spawn token and then Ousted my Purists so the rebound would miss. I drew an Ogre Sentry and went to town with that for a short time. At one point I used Staggershock to kill a second Invoker from him. I was planning on using the rebound to kill his Soul’s Attendant when he went to play Makindi Griffin. I had another Staggershock and Lust for War in my hand and he was at ten so I Staggershocked his Attendant in response and used both rebounds to put him at 6. My plan was for the Lust for War and Ogre to finish him off. Little did I know he had a second Consuming Vapors to kill my 5/5 Ogre (which he had chump blocked once) and he used the rebound to take out the Lust for War Griffin. I played another Ogre Sentry and Emrakul’s Hatcher to smash with. He had only one creature to block and I had Heat Ray, but I sense something was up so I just swung with my bigger dudes. He tried to Emerge Unscathed his guy before blockers and I patted myself on the back as I Heat Rayed it in response. Unfortunately the next turn he cast All is Dust… Nice rares. I still had the hatched spawn tokens and chariot and used them to finish him off. I boarded in another land for the Purists. Game 2 I quickly Lust for Wared him to death. Emrakul’s Hatcher provided enough chumps. There was one point where I had to play carefully because he would get through with double Repel the Darkness so I put out just enough blockers. He had two Repels, but not three so I survived.
Round 3 I got both my Rage Nimbus again, but this time I drew Warmonger’s Chariot before too long and smashed my opponent with my 7/5 flyers. He could only kill one of them. Game 2 I lose my early Rage Nimbus to a Merfolk Seascout when I forced it to attack and he had Eel Umbra. I tried to Smite it, but he also had a counter, unfortunate. He used Essence Feed to drop an accelerated Ulamog’s Crusher, but I Ousted it. I was planning on using Lust for War again to win while I sat behind my fully leveled Purists and he waited to get his eighth land, but then he dropped Guul Draz Assassin and countered my removal. So I just Ousted his assassin and milled it away with Keening Stone. He dropped the Crusher, but another activation of the stone and he was decked.
I had a unique deck and didn’t lose a game with it. Double Rage Nimbus was great, eating about two creatures per round and buying me a lot of time to find my few win conditions (It also helps to have 4/5 flyers to team up with). I only drew a Vent Sentinel once even though most of my games ran long and my opponent was already dead to Lust for War so I never used it. I took home the 8 packs and the Vengevine- a pretty sweet draft all around.
Wow
Your wall deck did well. I can't believe you won without Totem Hartebeasts. That is the key to any wall deck i've played. That + lust for war. But then again I have never had double rage nimbus or double stagger in a wall deck.
I agree with Dan
RW defenders is awesome if you open 2 rage nimbus, which doesn't happen often enough. There have been to many times where I have tried to draft defender.dec and got rolled.
I really wish u had recorded this draft because it would have been interesting to see what else was in the packs. Nice job though!
Keening stone is the nuts sometimes and I have lost several matches to it!
I prefer to draft UW levelers of BR tokens most of the times if I can in RRR!
Pete, I would like to record a draft for this site. Can you give instruction on how and what I need to do to get the draft recorder?
Hey Nate
What's up Nate. I will work on posting a page tonight that will show everyone how to do draft replays.
Defender.dec can happen but not likely
R/W defender.dec isn't that easy to go in draft because all the key cards are uncommon (Soulbound Guardian and Warmonger's Chariot). You really just happen to get lucky with your packs =) which is a very good trait to have.
For those reading, don't think for a minute that RW defender is a draft archtype; trust me it isn't.
Good job on going 3-0.
May you continue to pwn noobs,
Dan
Yeah
I'm definitely not advocating this type of deck per se. I've never drafted a wall deck and have beat it several times. I think what this does a good job of showing is that you need to stay true to an archetype, reprioritizing your usual draft order to make the best deck. Of course, it would do a better job if you could see the cards I passed to take the usually sub-par walls that make this deck shine.
Very Original Deck
This deck seems pretty damn good. I like ousting your domesticated creature back to your deck. Pretty good. After seeing your list, I thought to myself Keening Stone seems good in this deck. Then reading your matches, it won you quite a few games I noticed. Chariot rocks in this deck and if you would have got vent sentinel out more often it would have won you games also.
